Stay in your Truth is about the unraveling of invisible abuse. The kind of abuse so under the radar that its victims have no idea it’s happening, but once it is seen, it can’t be unseen. And as soon as you cannot unsee it, you will have no other choice but to accept your new reality” a reality that the life you lived might have been a lie.
In her teaching memoir, Cathy invites readers into the life of a child adopted at 18 days old by parents who told her she was “special” and “loved more.” But if that was the case, why was she also told “children should be seen and not heard” and to “only speak when spoken to”? These lies—told to Cathy throughout her childhood by the two people who were supposed to protect her—became her relationship template for over 50 years. Not only are the 21 lies she discusses in her book the reasons why she was attracted to self-sabotaging and emotionally abusive people, those same lies kept her from realizing her true self.
Within a span of fewer than five years, Cathy endured the shock of her husband of 18 years suffering a massive, disabling stroke at the age of 58. While taking care of her disabled husband and two children she found out that her husband was being accused of a crime. She defended her husband’s innocence by hiring a lawyer… but then learned that he had been deceiving her for years. When this came to light, her husband divorced her and made her sell their family home. He never spoke to her again. Being betrayed by her husband (who also smeared her to family members and friends) forced her into isolation. Eventually, Cathy was diagnosed with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The only way she was able to process her intense grief was to write a memoir that she hopes will help others. By dissecting and laying bare the lies that her intimate partners, family members, and friends told her, Cathy proves that the truth shall se you free.”
